Are You Being Served? This is a featured page

Are You Being Served? Are You Being Served? began broadcasting across the UK in the year of 1972. It was set inside a store called "Grace Brothers" and was mainly oriented around the staff of the Ladies and Menswear department that were located on the same floor.
The store was run by Young Mr Grace (later replaced by Old Mr Grace) who was a bumbling frail man often surrounded by women a lot younger than him. Underneath Young Mr Grace was the manager of the Ladies and Menswear department Mr Rumbold who was often given very dopey sectaries to counter-balance his own mistakes of getting the wrong end of the stick. This mistake would normally cause several comic up rises between him and the staff.

The Floorwalker is the snooty upturned nose Captain Peacock. Wise and intelligent but a terrible flirt with women which often causes him to get into trouble with his wife who on one occasion chased Mrs Slocombe around the store with an umbrella believing that she had had an affair with him.

Mrs Slocombe is the head of the Ladies department and can prove to be extremely snotty about seventy per-cent of the time - that is until she becomes really demanding or receives an insult switching to a very Northern accent which would usually follow with a look that could put Medusa to shame. She also has a Junior called Miss Brahms who is Cockney to a T. Miss Brahms is certainly not afraid to speak her mind but is often easily confused or harassed by Captain Peacock or Mr Lucas.

On Menswear there is the grumpy but absolutely lovable Mr Grainger (later replaced by the amusing Mr Tebbs). The "I'm Free" Mr Humphries and the cheeky young Mr Lucas (later replaced by Mr Spooner) who has often got some excuse to be late, break the rules, chat up Miss Brahms and his personal favourite of winding up Mrs Slocombe.

Mr Mash (later to be replaced with Mr Harman) brightens up this cast with his Cockney ways of trying to sort out a situation. It is either that or speaking his mind rudely to Captain Peacock.

All of these characters try to work together in perfect harmony but it does not always go according to plan. They often get themselves into ridiculous situations which then results in them getting into trouble with Mr Rumbold. However when sales drop in the store or Young Mr Grace has a certain spurt of enthusiasm normally results in them having to dress up in funny costumes.
Of course it wasn't the silly costumes that highlighted the show but it was also the double innuendo gags that were used.

Are You Being Served? came to an end in 1985 after 69 episodes and 10 series. It was one of the longest running sitcoms to date and regularly shows repeats on the TV. The show was written by David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd.
