Arthur EnglishArthur English was born on 9th May 1919. He was born in Hampshire and after finishing serving in the army (he made Sergeant) he went on to work as a painter/decorator. Whilst doing this he tidied up his acting and comic skills and he pocessed and after a while appeared at the Windmill Theatre which was followed with the sucess of other shows. Variety Bandbox was his first radio show that he appeared on using his own accent. He was quite stereotypical. He was nick-named "The Prince of the Wide Boys" and devloped the catch-phrase "Play the music! Open the cage!".

Eventuantly this started to lead onto bigger things which included a lot of comedy roles on TV. His most striking was naturally Mr Harman in Are You Being Served? which he portrayed from series four (after Larry Martyn left) right through until the end. He appeared in 48 episodes of the sitcom.

Arthur also made roles in two British childrens programmes; The Ghosts of Motley Hall (1976-1978) and Follyfoot (1971-1973). They were both produced by the ITV. He appeared in some movies and then he played Jack Wilds' granddad in Maths Counts.

His wife Ann passed away and Arthur re-married a dance with whom he had a daughter with. That marriage ended and on the 16th April 1995 Arthur English died due to Emphysema.
