James HayterJames Hayter was born 23rd April 1907 in Lonuvla in India and raised in Scotland. Graduated from Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and in 1936 he made his first film appearence in a film called Sensation. However his acting career had to be put on hold due to the Second World War for which he had to serve in the Royal Armoued Corps. When the war was over he continued with acting. He made a TV series in 1946 called Pinwright's Progress. In 1952 he made his most famous role as Friar Tuck in The Story of Robin Hood and His Merrie Men. He also played Samuel Pickwick in The Pickwick Papers that same year.

He was offered the role of Mr Tebbs in the hit TV series Are You Being Served? after Arthur Brough died. He took the role whole-heartidly but after one series left the series due to the conflict with staying with the series or continue making the Mr Kipling adverts for more money. They believed Are You Being Served? would cause problems for their snack advertisements. They said that Mr Tebbs was unpleasent and it would ruin their image. However James Hayter did state that he would have continued with the series if that had not been the case. He only appeared in 6 episodes.

James Hayter died on 27th March 1983 in Spain.
