Mollie SugdenMollie Sugden was originally born Mary Isobel Sugden in Yorkshire in 1922. She discovered from an early age that making people laugh was what she wanted to do. After she left school the Second World War broke out so Mollie worked in a factory that made shells for the Royal Navy. After being made redundant she went to Guildhall Scool of Drama in London.

For a few years she worled alongside Eric Sykes and worked on radio. She married William Moore on 29th March 1958 and they had two children (twins Robin and Simon). Her break through came when she appeared in the sitcom Hugh and I which was written by John Chapman. She also starred in another show that he wrote called The Liver Birds. She played Mrs Hutchinson who was Sandra's mother from 1971-1979. She was to take on the role of Mrs Hutchinson again in 1996 when The Liver Birds was brought back despite being extremely ill at the time from Polymyalgia.

Mollie's most famous role was Mrs Slocombe in Are You Being Served? She played Mrs Slocombe for all 69 episodes but half way through filming they made a new short lived TV series when they thought Are You Being Served? had finished for good. She played the lead in Come Back Mrs Noah. However they were mistaken. Are You Being Served? played on and finally finished after 12 years.

Other than Are You Being Served? Mollie appeared in Coronation Street playing the role of Nellie Harvey. Although she was in Corrie for 11 years she only made regular appearences instead of every episode due to her other commitments. In 1987 she appeared in My Husband and I where she played alongside her real life husband William Moore.

Mollie made guest appearences and seven years after Are You Being Served? had finished she was asked to reprise her role of Mrs Slocombe in Grace and Favour. She also made a guest appearence in Little Britain and in 2002 a tribute programme called Celebrating Mollie Sugden.

Mollie passed away on the 1st July 2009.
