Mr Grainger (later to be replaced by Mr Tebbs) was the lovable, grouchy Head of the Menswear Department in Are You Being Served? Mr Grainger served four decades at Grace Brothers before leaving. However in his time on Menswear he hated the fact that the Ladieswear Department was sharing the same floor and was constantly insisting that the sales would increase if the floor was completely dedicated to the Men's. This normally caused conflict between him and Mrs Slocombe and created exceptionally funny scenes in Mr Rumbold's office.
He looked similar from Winston Churchill and could do impressions of him as well. He was often slow on the uptake but not only that Mr Grainger also had a habbit of falling asleep in random places which resulted in the reoccuring joke between him and Mr Humphries. "Mr Grainger...Are you free?" Mr Humphries would sing and Mr Grainger would often jump awake saying "Yes I'm free!!".
