Mr Humphries was the Senior Menswear Assistant of the Gentleman's Department in Are You Being Served? In later episode's you see him as the Head of the Gentleman's Department. Mr Humphries the most loveable character on the show is well known for his mincing walk, high voice, one liners, rediculous costumes, taking charge or directing their own performances and his most famous catchphrase "I'm free!".

Mr Humphries always has a story to tell about a friend of his though he conviently doesn't state what status the friend is nor does he say if it is a male or female friend. However on several occasions there are hints about what sex the friend he is talking about. He get's a little bit of stick from Mr Lucas (later Mr Spooner) about the confidences he shares but Mr Humphries normally brushes it off with a quick remark back and a smile.

Mr Humphries sexuality was never stated due to the time this was being filmed (it was illegal to be gay in the 1970's). A lot has been said that he was gay or bi-sexual. However despite the fact that Mr Lucas insists that Mr Humphries is "sitting on both sides of the fence" to which Mr Humphries normally replies "That way I can see both sides" as an audience we just have to assume that he was just a Mummies boy.
