Nicholas SmithNicholas Smith was born on the 5th March 1934. In his early days of acting for TV he normally just non-speaking extra roles. His first speaking role was actually in Doctor Who-The Dalek Invasion of Earth. He was desperate to keep working so he asked the shows director to expand his role which he agreed to and he appeared in three out of the six episodes. Roles after that remained small. In 1966 his daughter was born (actress Catherine Russell who replaced Lesley Vickerage as Helen Lynley in The Inspector Lynley Mysteries last year)

Then in 1972 he was cast as the dim-witted Mr Rumbold in Are You Being Served? He remained with the show through all 69 episodes. He also appeared in the spin-off film as did all the original cast (with the exception of Mr Mash) and he also returned as Mr Rumbold in the sequel Grace and Favour. Nicholas has just recently performed the voice of Vicar Cleveland Hedges in the film Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Ware Rabbit.

Nicholas is now 75 and lives with his wife Mary.
